The Brief

I was reached out to by this music artist to make an album cover and tracklist for his upcoming album All 4 The Garnet. He asked for a high contrast black and white design with a white background using abstract shapes as well as 1-3 gemstones. He also wanted it to take on a very grungy tone.

Concepts

I started with mood boarding and sketches, and then moved onto testing 3 distinct concepts.

  1. concept one is a more direct nod to the gemstones using them in different ways to create a dynamic composition.

  2. concept two used one gemstone in the middle of the screen revised with the reflection of a smile as he asked for.

  3. concept 3 was an attempt to stretch the brief as far as possible using textures and overlays to create this super high contrast design that feels dynamic

The Solution

The solution that was picked was concept 2 with the central gemstone, and using that concept I went and create the tracklist, adhering to the identity I was creating with this commission. He asked me to present a version with less texture as well which was not used in the final product.

Conclusion

This project was incredibly helpful to me as it was my first commissioned album artwork that I got off the heels of my 30 day album artwork redesign challenge. I learned a lot about the process of working with a client one on one as I had only done something similar through a paid internship I participated in, but even then I was part of team not individually shipping solutions.
