The red bands in the background are representative of bandages or a reinforcement of the symbolism present with the spotlight. The man with the umbrella is there to give the tone of the book set in a city with a feeling of the narrator being a mystery man. The lamp is an IKEA lamp and represents his IKEA furniture in the apartment he blows up. The light rays from the lamp are being blocked by the umbrella to further the idea that the narrator is a forgettable unremarkable person hence the fact that he has no spotlight on him. The repetition of the man underneath is indicative of tyler being the same person as the narrator. The comic book style lends itself to the fact that this is a satire therefore it looks a little lighthearted. Lastly, the B in “Fight Club” looks like a pair of glasses to reinforce the idea of anonymity and mystery.
